Can military service permanately destroy a man's chance of dating, settling down, and marrying?

I feel that, based upon my own personal experience, that the answer to this question would be a resounding yes. However, I would like others' opinions on this as well. Specifically, I am referring to men who enlist in the military directly upon high school graduation. Based upon my observations, it seems that most men (and women) go to college directly after high school and do not have to join the armed forces like I did. Moreover, it seems to me that 85 to 90% of college students are "traditional" aged students who graduate no later than 23 years old and are usually married no later than age 26. There is a HUGE misperception among Americans that 99% of American citizens support our active duty military personnel. That couldn't be further from the truth as I know for a fact that military personnel are viewed with downright contempt in southeast VA and eastern NC. This creates an atmosphere that is counterproductive with regards to dating for Marines and sailors stationed in places like this because all of the single women are outside Norfolk, VA and Jax, NC where servicemen and women are not welcome. The only guys who got married while I was on active duty were guys from smaller towns in the midwest and the southeast who ended up marrying their hometown sweethearts. I got out of the service and proceeded to go directly into the workforce. My workplace shut down and I became one of those student veterans that is using the GI Bill. I currently live in CO's second largest "city" and it is impossible to date here unless you were pretty much born and raised here as the town that I live in is very cliquey to say the least. I am originally from a larger city in the southeast and know that I am moving back there when I finally graduate from college here. I don't want to move back to the same city in which I was born in. With that said, do any of you all know of some good LARGER cities in the southeast that I could move to where I wouldn't be looked upon as strange and/or gay since I am now in my very early 30s, am not married, and have no children? Quite frankly, upon graduation from college, I will be too old to begin dating and I refuse to play the role of daddy for the childern of the myriad amounts of single moms out there who are my age. I am losing who I am?

Well since you did not get any real responses. Im 18 years old. Only got my license recently. I failed my first time because i failed to see a pedestrian crossing. It was a critical mistake and a automatic fail. I took it in San Francisco so theres so many people and its crazy. BIG problem with my parents. help!?

Ok so my parents got divorced about 3 years ago and now I live with my mom and my stepdad. I really don't like my stepdad because he drinks a lot. Everynight at dinner he'll be drinking wine, and some beforehand and maybe even afterwards. Some nights he leaves dinner early to collapse on the couch or after dinner he'll go straight upstairs to bed, falling down the stairs on the way. When he's drunk he also has a really short temper so he picks fights VERY easily with my mom at night, if she says one thing out of order he'll go crazy and start fussing at her. It pisses me off so much. Tonight i went downstairs to get some water and he straight up said "Your impossible." I didnt do anything or say anything to him and he feels like he has the right to do that? I don't know if my mom is even happy with him anymore of if she feels as if shes trapped. If she is happy, I don't see how. I'm pretty sure by now my stepdad is an alcoholic and its doing a lot of damage. I've been hurt so many times because he has been drunk. Not physically but emotionally, and I can't take it anymore. Tonight I was extremely close to running away. I can't bear living here anymore, knowing he's like that. My mom is so happy and cheerful until he comes along with his drunk self. I don't know what I should do. Talk to my counselor about it, tell my real dad, please help me and give me some suggestions. Ok first off the pup was taken from mom and litter mates to early. That is the first thing working against you. You are going to have biting because normally if the pup stayed with the litter and he bit his litter mates to hard the pups would either bite back or yelp and stop playing. If he bit mom to hard she would put her mouth around his neck and pin him to the ground to tell him she has had enough. So you tapping the dog in the nose is not communicating that you mean enough. You are actually doing the opposite and enticing him to play. Dont tap or hitthe dog he is a puppy not human so it does not have the same meaning to him as it does to us. You should only give him a sharp no. As far as walking a.9 week old puppy he is way to young to umderstand heel. Right now he should just be getting used to walking on a leash period. The come command should only be used for fun right now and never scold him only praise him no matter what if he comes. If he did do something wrong use an entirely different word like get over here or something like that. The sit command at his age should be just that. It does not matter if he gets up the point is he sat and he gets rewarded. Dogs only know black and white. Always use hand signals for each command. Pups of that age should only be learning one command at a time and training sessions should be no longer than 15 minutes. Once he has sit down pat you can move to the next command. The next command should be stay to follow with others.

I was inspired by a question I read earlier. This person asked how they could exploit and manipulate the weaknesses of a clinical sociopath. This had me thinking for a while about how society views people with mental illnesses. It's not like the person wants to be ill, they cannot help it. These people should be treated or at least medicated not scorned by society. Why is violence and intolerance against people who suffer from mental illness so easily tolerated?

Do you agree assuming human life survives for the next 1000 years, that aging will be cured?

I think that with the advancement of many technological and scientific advancements, that we could see such a thing happen with human lifespans. I mean there are so many things being discovered and different things coming out these days. A new technology comes out and is soon forgotten because something new is always coming up. I think when people hear of such a thing as living very long compared to the way humans do now, they don't know how to fathom it. The earth is already polulated, indeed so I don't get why people keep seeing that as the main problem that we'd have along with longer lifespans. If that is a problem, then whos to say that humans could not solve it. If aging is cured, humans would still have accidents and die. We would just be cured of aging and the diseases that come with it completely. Death would still be an everyday thing but people would not be dying from old age in the large numbers that we see now. I think that is why so many people think there would be too many people around with very increased lifespans. They think that death will be completely illiminated.

They don't have to be boring. I just finished one called Vampires Rule where the girl kicks serious werewolf butt and seems to know more about what's going on than the guy does. Also, he goes from vampire to mortal and has to deal with the fallout of returning home to his family. His younger brother is now his older brother. It was pretty awesome. You just need a cool hook and great characters like this book has.

One of my friends called Abbie is just amazing. She is absolutely gorgeous, lovely, smart, bubbly, cheerful, friendly, funny, always smiling and everyone really likes her. Help! I need to find a dog sanctuary!!?

My 5-6 year old rottie has been deemed dangerous by our town for two "bites," however they were scratches, as written in the police reports. One of them is due to a teenager harassing our dog by scaring her with a mask on, after we told him to stay away from our dog. That teenagers family told the selectmen that she is extremely dangerous and pushed to have her euthanized. Now we have 7 days to place her in a no-kill dog sanctuary or she will be put down. She is an excellent dog and she doesn't deserve to be put down, she is being discriminated against because of her breed. Even the dog officer said it's because of her breed- it scares people. I live in south eastern Massachusetts, so if anyone could please help me find a place that would take her, I would appreciate it so much! I love my dog and want the best for her!

My friend is a very lively and cheerful person, bu she's so pessimistic. Pessimistic not in the way that she gets easily depressed. I'll just tell you what I think of her. In facebook, I still remember who I talked to (my friends are anime role players so basically, I have at least 10 or more friends with similar names but I remember the person whom I had a conversation with) even if the conversation was last year.. She does not. I think she's just not inclined to remember the happenings if it occurred a few weeks to a month ago. I already knew her by name even when we were not close yet in FB, I remember I always see her post that she has fever.. When we became close and even became textmates, every now and then she come down with fever, she's always in and out of the hospital. But she's very lively, like, she said to me one time that her hand bled where the needle was injected coz she moves around the hospital bed a lot because of laughing from our conversation. She texts me and says, "LOL, I'll die soon so I have to be happy." "If you're God, I'll ask you, 'Why did You give me life if I'm just mean to suffer' LOL!" She's pessimist and always tells us she's gonna die soon, but she seems okay with it. She works a lot in school, president of different clubs, school assignments, projects, extra curricular activities. She said was pulled out from her section and placed in a different class, a class of 4 students who have sickness. Accdg to her, she has post traumatic stress that's why she always has fever. One "psychotic" facebook user is verbally torturing her, and us, her friends, were in defense. She says she always cries and always apologizes to us, saying it's her fault we became involved. She easily cries, she's emotional. But as I said, when she's happy, she's really happy and lively. She is somewhat slow, although she can solve riddles (in the form of murder cases). I send her English quotes, she said she doesn't understand coz it's too deep, which I don't believe. She reads Tagalog (our language) poem, she says she doesn't understand, because it's too deep, which again I don't believe. I think she just doesn't want to think seriously. The last time now, a person close to her said my friend had headache, then collapsed. She did collapse before. I don't know, I think she has both physical and psychological problem. I don't think it's Alzheimer's, that's too severe, she's 14. I don't think it's dimentia either. Everybody forgets things sometimes, but I don't know what's the problem with her. Can you please help?

So starting last month, i started talking to this girl i like on twitter. She doesn't know me in real life and she's a year younger than me, we study in the same school. Why have I always been picked on my entire life?

I have this gut instinct that people always prejudge and scrutinize the very essence of my being without giving me a chance. I used to get picked on pretty bad in my younger school days, been in no less than 2 big school fights and sort of developed a reputation which made people eventually stay away from me. I live in california and have been out of work for a year. I was finally offered a job in washington but it doesn't pay a whole lot and my family and I have a paid for house here so we don't have to worry about a roof over our heads. We make enough on unemployment to keep up going for another 6 months but I'm afraid that if I don't take this job I won't be offered another one. I like california I honestly don't think I would like eastern washington that much and financially since up there we'd have to pay rent we'd be in kind of the same boat. What would you guys do? How can I make my father proud of me?

I was always a failure in my fathers eyes. I never got straight A's in school ,wasn't popular and wasn't good at sports. When high school ended, I didn't get into a prestigious college and now go to state one. My younger sister on the other hand is gets good grades, great at sports and wins awards constantly. This gap is something my father talks about constantly and how I'm a shame to the family because I have nothing to be proud of. I feel so guilty and ashamed because he gave up alot of his career promotions when I was younger to try to get me to study and work harder. Now my sister is about to go to a top ranked school and he can't stop talking about how proud he is of her to my family and friends. my bf (17y) can be happy one minute and sad or angry the next. we used to talk on the phone alot, he starts out cheerful but i say something and he takes it wrong suddenly hes sad and mad at himself over dumb things. i always have to watch what i say because he takes everything wrong and he thinks everything he does makes me sad....he recently had a stroke because of complications with heart surgery. i would cry alot because it hurt so much to know everything hes going through. he isnt the type of person to cry he wuld even feel bad because he cant cry wen something bad happens but i would hear him on the phone..crying because hes scared of more surgeries or another stroke he would say hed rather die..i cryd so much because i culdnt comfort him and he said he blames himself for making me cry. before the stroke he would have some mood swings but now they seem worse every time we talk by the end of the day i say sumthing not bad but he always changes this last time we talked he yelled at me and broke his phone so he couldnt make me sad anymore while hes in the hospital. he also seems more agressiv towards family and a little towards me. his sisters have mentioned they think he is bipolar jokingly but i think they wer also sserious. could all this be from the stroke or depression or bipolar?

Talking to a psychologist REALLY helps. They'll listen for a few days about your symptoms and experiences, "diagnose" you, and talk about what you can do to rid yourself of your anxiety. Let me tell you, it took me having to stay in a mental hospital i.e. psychiatricward to feel good about myself again. Don't let your mind get to that point where you feel like there's no hope, because there is. Your anxiety is holding you back from so many things you could accomplish. Think of the man inside yourself that can be released. It's such a pity that not many people get to see how great you probably are. Please talk to someone.

I want to stop being this guy's friend whom I was once romantically involved with without him knowing it. I want to gradually make it so we have no contact whatsoever. How do I become a nicer person?

I always feel people think the worst of me, because I have always been treated as an outsider all my life (I'm a foreigner). Growing up, I used to think everyone was sweet and good hearted, because we are all made in the image of God, but then bullying, backstabbing, ridicule, and scorned by the masses has made me feel extremely resentful towards everyone, and I can't help but conform to these expressions of hate. There are too many sarcastic people everywhere and I hate the relentless put downs which brings on more bad feelings! I am a Grammy that doesn't get to see her grandson and I am very resentful?

My son met the baby mama in high school. She broke up with him 2 times before they got back together the 3rd time and she got pregnant. They stayed together during the pregnancy and a year after B was born. Baby Moma will be called K. I was there at the hospital when B was born and her family totally took over and I barely got anytime with B..so I figured there will be plenty of time to see B so I went about my life. She used to bring him to see me once every 2 to 3 months. I told her I didn't mind watching B while she has errands to run or anytime I would love to spend some time with him and she says she's not comfortable leaving B at this time that she can't be away from him. Me being a mother myself I do understand this. I did not gripe about it, I was very supportive. after B's 1st birthday I again told her I would love for B to come over or stay the night or just for a couple of hours. She still said she's not comfortable. She felt guilty and started bringing him to my house with her guidance about once every 2 weeks for 6 months. I was ok with that. Now his 3rd birthday is coming up and I asked her if I could come get B sometime. and she still says Uh no. I asked why and she says until B comes around you more and is comfortable with you. Easter I dropped off his easter basket to her parents because that is where she lives and B was there with her whole family but She was not there, I felt so resentful at her whole family. I am sick and tired of this. He will be 3 and I am very hurt. His 3rd B-day is coming in July and I don't want to go. I told my son I did not want to go to the party because I may have a bad attitude watching her whole family be cheerful and take him over all the time like they did at the hospital. She texts me that this is not about me it's about B and I do understand it but I am only human and don't want to ruin B's party. My son won't exercise his visitation rights cause they have apparently gotten back together and working things out. Umm why do girls stare and when caught they look away from me?

Before I go on, these girls were NOT spacing out. They were looking at me from a distance, and when I got close they looked away. Girl number one, I noticed from a distance she was holding eye contact with me, when we got closer I looked at her and she looked away.. Girl number two the same thing, I just happened to glance at her (because she was cute) and I noticed she had been looking at me in the eyes from a distance, I could tell because she looked away when we made eye contact. It's kinda weird. I'm not gay or anything but some girls tell me I'm cute. I'm 6"1- 6"2 light to medium skin and have a slim build. Sooo why do girls do this? It's getting upsetting and it hurts my feelings?

My parents are really hurtful sometimes. My mother says I have an annoying voice that makes me sound ditzy, and I'm too happy and cheerful. My father tells people at the diner I work at that I'm "actually a natural blonde" (haha...not...I'm a born brunette) and it's commonplace for the regulars to call me a ditz/blondie/airhead...etc now since my dad says it often. Aquatic turtle questions?

I was think about getting turtles again...bcuz mymom sold my others one day while I was at school. I had a eastern painted about 1.5" and a RES about 3.5". Finding my spiritual path help?

I've been looking at a lot of different religions over the years and visited quite a few places in person. Nothing ever seems to "fit" me. I think many different religions set a wonderful example, and there is some truth in all of them. I have always been very interested in Eastern religions and adhere to some Eastern philosophies. I have looked at some liberal Christian churches as well but wasn't fully satisfied. I have looked into Judaism but I was put off by the fact ones in my area have monthly dues that I could not afford. I have looked into Paganism as well, and I find that personal or solitary practice does not fulfill me and there are not many Pagan groups in my area to choose from anyway. I like to be able to go somewhere and meet others and make friends where I choose to worship.

The fact that you question if your depressed let's me know something made you sad, was it that your mom left your dad? Or could it be that you blame yourself? My husband was accused of sexual assault on a child by a pissed off ex-girlfriend with an axe to grind. The saying is true..HELL HAVE NO FURY LIKE A WOMEN SCORNED.. We have evidence to prove that the accuser was making it up and she was just mad because my husband left her. 3 months after leaving from living with her( for 2 months) she files these charges. We have a witness that will testify to the fact that the accuser told her 3 months before she filed the charges that she "would do whatever I could to put him back in prison." He has a prior charge and he served prison time when he was 18 and she(the accuser) was his girlfriend at that time(the DA didn't know that). His prior was him taking a rap in order to make his "homeboys" proud and they would all be there for him when he got out.A stupid choice when he was 18. The accuser knew this and still stayed with him during his 3 yrs he did. She used that knowledge to put him in prison for a crime that he didn't commit just because she was mad because he didn't want to be with her again. How in the world as an American Citizen can an innocent man be sent to prison for a crime that he didn't commit!!!! There was no evidence against him, including no physical evidence even after an examination was done on the child. There was no signs of anything and according to their story if it would have happened there would have been signs of something. but he was scared into taking a plea deal. They used his past against him and told him that if he went to trial and was found guilty for any reason it was an automatic life sentence. Or he could take the plead deal of 10 yrs probation up to 18yrs. He wasn't even given the chance to show what he has to prove that he is innocent. He was just forced to pick a gamble with life in prison or 10 yrs probation up to 18 yrs prison time. And it was a hard decision for him to make because he always said he would not take any plea deal because he is innocent, but he was almost guaranteed the probation even up to moments before he was sentenced to 18 yrs the lawyer was explaining what he was gonna have to do while on probation and now he is in prison serving 18 yrs :( PLEASE, PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP US. My feeling is this. The West goes about arming regimes because 'it is good for business' in our own countries. And then God forbid, they damn well start using them against their own citizens. Well we can't have that can we? So in goes NATO to try to make the point that this is not acceptable. The reason that Mubarak was left alone and to some extent Syria is that they didn't make the mistake of Gadaffi. Namely that he explicitly stated he was going to go after his rebels with all his western supplied military might. A red rag to a bull. Assad and Mubarak at least made the pretence of offering reform first. This doesn't make them any better, particularly Assad. And the UN resolutions condemning Assad reflect that. But the idea that the Libyan rebels are getting help solely because Libya has oil is to me just a coincidence. Gadaffi was stupid and he is now paying the price. He's been indicted by the ICC as a result whereas the likes of Mubarak face prosecution in their own countries. I actually abhor what NATO is doing to Libya, because in the end there will just be a pile of rubble where Libya once stood. And that is not good for the suffering population of Libya whichever side they are on. That is the futility of air strikes. You go in, bomb like mad and then expect whoever takes over to somehow pick up the pieces. Its blunt, it's brutal, but people like Gadaffi bring it on themselves at the end of the day.

Hi folks ,Im 20 and am a very timid person , not the awkward kind of timid but I just take a while to get used to people in general but once I do I am very cheerful and genuine. However . the thing is that its only recently that I have begun to break free from my shell and start to talk to people , be it in school or in general. In high school I used to be very self conscious about my appearance , the way I spoke , the way I "thought" people perceived me etc and so I missed out on a lot of things most kids in High school did ie parties etc . Flash forward to present day , I have matured quite a bit , I have gained some confidence and have become healthy ( used to be 210 pounds and am now 160 lbs , quite an accomplishment in my opinion) . So here is my main question , off late I have been running into a lot of my former high school peers but they never acknowledge my presence , they sorta look past me as though they don't know me . I really want to say hi to them but seeing them causes all my insecurities to come back to me . My main logic is that since they didn't really speak to me High school for 5 years , then why would they do so now . These people have added me on facebook but when it comes to face to face contact they don't care to communicate. So is it my duty to say hello ? Sometimes I feel like Im being the bad guy by not initiating a conversation or smiling at them but its just that I fear that they might look at me as the loser I was in High school . I think he for sure still has feelings for you, at least thats how it sounds. He looks at you and all those memories of your relationship come flooding back and he probably misses the good times you guys shared. It takes a while to get over any relationship, no matter how long it lasted, and my guess is just like you hes not completely over what you guys had. I'm sure he thought he was over you until you guys hung out and he saw you and realized how much things have changed. How you want to handle this is up to you, you could talk to him? See if he will open up to you and tell you what he's really feeling. Tell him you need to hang out with him one on one and just get everything off your chest and see what he says. OR you can move on, because honestly hun you deserve SOO MUCH BETTER. By telling you he "needs you" and all that he might just be making sure you'll hang on just a little bit longer, in case things get tough and he needs someone to fall back on. Which is a jerk thing to do. Find yourself a man who loves you for you, doesn't drink to be happy or do drugs, someone who makes you their world because they think your the greatest thing the ever walk into their life.
